Excellency U Wunna Maung Lwin, Union Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations signed an Additional Protocol to the Safeguards Agreement (Protocol additional to the Agreement between The Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the International Atomic Energy Agency for the application of Safeguards) in connection with the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons on 17 September 2013 at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

By being a State Party to the Additional Protocol, Myanmar recognizes its responsibility to provide the IAEA with wider access to information of its peaceful use of nuclear energy, increased physical access by IAEA inspectors, and improved administrative arrangements.
